ALLOY COLD FINISH ROUND STEEL BAR ASTM A108

Cold finish alloy steel bars provide quality, productivity and economy through the features of enhanced mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, enhanced straightness and brighter uniform surface through the process of cold drawing. Along with enhanced machinability, cold finished alloy steel bars provide measurable value. There are three factors that add value to cold finished steel bars over hot rolled steel bars:

Structural integrity (internal soundness) | Improved surface quality | Straightness and close dimensional tolerances

Below you will find a comprehensive chart detailing each grade, their applications and size range stocked for ROUND shaped bars

Grade Size Range Length
4140
1/4" to 5" Round
10'/12' RL

Description:

This alloy responds well to heat treatment. Its chromium content provides good hardness penetration, and the molybdenum imparts uniformity of hardness and high strength. In the annealed condition it machines at 110 sfm. Other desirable properties include good wear resistance, excellent toughness and good ductility in the quenched and tempered condition.

Application:

Highly stressed parts, or parts subject to severe wear.

41L40
1/4" to 4" Round
10'/12' RL

Description:

The addition of lead to this grade increases cutting production with excellent finish and good tool life. Machinability is raised to 145 sfm. Like 4140 annealed, it responds well to heat treatment with good strength and wear resistance, excellent toughness, good ductility in the quenched and tempered condition.

Application:

Use when faster machining speeds than those afforded by non-leaded 4140 annealed are desired.

8620
1/4" to 5" Round
10'/12' RL

Description:

The most widely used carburizing alloy. The nickel content imparts good toughness and ductility. The chromium and molybdenum increases hardness penetration and wearability. This steel’s well balanced alloy content permits hardening to produce a strong, tough core and high case hardness. It machines at 110 sfm and has good welding qualities.

Application:

Structural parts such as gears, pinions, spline shafts, pins and a variety of other important applications requiring a hard wear surface and a ductile core.

86L20
1/2" to 3" Round
10'/12' RL

Description:

Lead added to this grade increases parts production by about 25% with excellent finish and good tool life. Machining speeds are increased to 145 sfm and there are no adverse effects on properties. Readily carburized, the well balanced alloy content of this grade permits hardening to produce a strong, tough core and high case hardness.

Application:

Structural parts such as gears, pinions, spline shafts, pins and a variety of other important applications requiring a hard wear surface and a ductile core.

“e.t.d.” 150 ®
1/2" to 3-1/2: Round
10'/12' RL

Description:

Another high strength material made by Niagara LaSalle’s patented “e.t.d” ® (elevated temperature drawing) process. Eliminates heat treating and secondary operations such as straightening, finish grinding, cleaning, and inspections. “e.t.d.” 150 ® can be roll threaded, knurled and plated. Suitable for induction hardening. “e.t.d.” 150 ® is also electro-magnetically tested using eddy current.

Application:

Gears, shafts, pinions, fasteners, axles, and other parts to replace heat treated alloy parts.
